Our paving broke up in under two years. What went wrong?

Usually 50mm or 60mm blocks carrying vehicles they were never meant to. Around Embakasi the traffic is heavier than domestic: matatus, delivery lorries, constant turning. That is 80mm work on a deeper base, and laying lighter blocks there guarantees a repeat.

Where should the water go?

Not into the existing drainage lines near Fedha and Greenspan, which already surcharge in the long rains. On those plots we design a soakaway or permeable construction rather than connecting to a system that is full when you need it most.

The drainage lines around Fedha and Greenspan surcharge during the long rains. Connecting a new paved area to them is not a solution, because there is nowhere for the water to go at exactly the moment you need it to.

On those plots we design a soakaway or permeable construction. It costs more and it works.

Hardstanding carrying more than it was built for

Nyayo Estate and the denser blocks have vehicles parked on areas originally laid as footpaths. Nothing about those build-ups was intended for it.

Where a committee wants to formalise parking, the honest answer is rebuilding those areas properly rather than relaying the same blocks on the same base.
